What's Happening to the KCB City Hall?

"We have nothing to show for 2,048 days of delays. Oh, sure. The city has clogged our parking lots with trailers, spent over a million bucks, and barred us from using our perfectly good building," one resident said after the April 20, 2023, commission meeting.

In January, city officials made a last ditch attempt to convince residents that City Hall is a decrepit wreck. From jack-hammering part of the floor in City Hall to hiding the FEMA letter, to the "facts" mailed by a commissioner, the City Hall coverup has been nothing but flim flam. Read the facts about City Hall instead of the fake news.

Also in January, city attorney Smits reinforced the "condemned" story when he told commissioners that all existing areas in city hall, including the Marble Hall portion, must legally be considered unsafe.

KCB City Hall Retired Building Official Ed Borysiewicz impugned that narrative. "The city hall building was not substantially damaged due to Hurricane Irma, period." Commissioner Foster challenged former Building Official Lenny Leggett’s assumptions, saying he was "struggling with condemning a building that's never been condemned based on the word 'unsafe'."

Finally, after nearly six-and-one-half years of official city delays, contractors, local volunteers, and KCB Public Works employees began the repairs to City Hall in February, 2024. They replaced dry wall. They replumbed the bathrooms. They did electrical work and replaced the air conditioning for the post office and for Marble Hall.

Now, seven more months later, "City Hall" is still in a trailer and we're still waiting...
